Fan as an alternative to air conditioning
An air conditioner is not the only way to cool down on a hot day: ceiling fans, stand fans, tower fans, floor fans or table fans are, in comparison to air conditioners
- cheaper to buy,
- more economical to run,
- require no maintenance and
- run more quietly.
A fan is easier to place or install, can be conveniently controlled by remote control or app, depending on the model, and does not create a closed room climate like an air conditioner, but provides pleasant, even air circulation.
Fans come in a variety of designs, materials, colours and styles, and even with lighting.
How does a fan work?
A fan is made up of a motor and rotor blades. When the motor is switched on, the blades start to rotate rapidly. This creates a flow of air. When this airflow hits your body, it removes heat from your skin. The principle is similar to the effect you feel when you blow on damp skin, which has a cooling effect.
How much power does a fan use?
The power consumption of a fan depends on the model, power level and running time. You can find the power in watts in the product description of the fan you have chosen. Here are a few tips to keep power consumption, and therefore costs, down:
- Avoid stand-by mode
- Use a low speed setting
- Choose a good location for air circulation, e.g. near a window or in the middle of the room.
How to place or attach a fan?
- Floor fans have the flexibility to be positioned anywhere in the room and work best when they are not obstructed by objects such as furniture. To avoid becoming a tripping hazard, it is best to place a floor fan as close to a wall as possible.
- Tower fans belong to the floor fan category, but they do not have a base and are characterised by their narrow, space-saving design. They are also known as column fans and, like all types of floor fans, can be flexibly placed where they are needed to provide cooling. However, they are not height adjustable.
- Table fans are handy and provide the necessary cooling, for example at the desk in the office
Sleeping with a fan on - is it unhealthy?
While it's tempting to run the ceiling fan or table fan in the bedroom on hot summer nights, even in hot temperatures, you're not immune to catching a cold when a blast of cold air hits your body for hours. These are some ways to avoid catching a cold:
- Ceiling fan with remote control: With a remote control, a ceiling fan can be switched on and off regardless of location - i.e. even from the comfort of your bed. You can also regulate the speed of a ceiling fan with remote control, because you don't want it to get too cold in the bedroom. In the case of a ceiling fan with a lamp, the light can be controlled and dimmed, for example, to create the right lighting mood before sleeping.
- Fan with timer: If the fan is to provide cooling but not run all night, models with a timer are suitable. The integrated timer can be programmed so that the fan goes into sleep mode itself at the desired time.
