E14 Cap Fitting: What does it mean?

The term E14 Light bulb refers to a specific type of screw cap light bulb, energy-saving lamp or LED that has an E14 base. Due to the EU-wide ban, only the energy-efficient LED bulbs are still on sale. The E14 bases of the LED bulbs have a diameter of 14 mm and are suitable for lights with an E14 socket. By the way, the E stands for Thomas Edison, the developer of the base thread.

How many watts does an E14 LED have?

The power of a lamp, such as an incandescent bulb, is expressed in watts: The more watts, the brighter the lamp shines. For E14 LED lamps, however, the unit of measurement lumen (lm) is used instead of watt. Lumen measures the luminous flux of a light source. A 25-watt light bulb has about 220 lm, whereas a comparable LED lamp has 249. So an LED lamp has a better luminous efficacy compared to a conventional light bulb, which is measured in lumens per watt. Another advantage is the longer life of an LED. Just like incandescent bulbs, LEDs with an E14 base come with different outputs: from about 50 lm/W up to 1100 lm/W.

Functions of E14 LED bulbs

There are E14 LED light bulbs with various practical functions:

  • Dimming: Some LED light sources are dimmable, which is indicated by a separate marking. Whether bright light for reading or dimmed for a cosy atmosphere with friends: Dimmable LEDs are versatile and practical.
  • Colour temperature: The colour temperature of many LED lamps with E14 bases, such as those from the Ledvance (formerly OSRAM) or Philips brands, can also be variably adjusted. Cool white, daylight white or warm white: the light colour provides the right ambience.
  • Light colour: Various models of LED lamps with E14 base have a very special technology: they can change their colour, for example red, blue, green or yellow.
  • Remote control/app: Smart LED lamps can be controlled and adjusted via a remote control or app.

Using LED bulbs with E14 bases

  • Although the sphere shape and the bulb shape are also available for E14 light sources, the candle shape, the drop shape and the tube shape are best suited for the narrow base diameter. Candle shaped bulbs can be used especially in lights such as chandeliers. The drop shape is decorative and can spice up the look of table lamps, for example.
  • Filament LEDs: A very special category of E14 LED light sources are the E14 filament LEDs. They are constructed like the typical light bulb with filaments inside. The filaments create a warm light, like that produced by candles. Their glass is clear in contrast to the often matt LEDs, so that the filament can be seen. Therefore, their use is optimal for lights without lampshades as in many vintage lamps or incandescent lamps.
