What are G9 bulbs?

G9 lamps are pin-base lamps that have been specially developed for use in small, compact lights. They allow the light to be directed and thus provide flexible lighting. The name is derived from the pin bases, which are 9 mm apart. Once used as high-voltage halogen lamps, G9 lamps with LED technology have been used since halogen was banned.

G9 LEDs are suitable, for example, for use in ceiling lights, spots and spotlights or in decorative table lamps. When buying, it is important to note that the indication on the light or in the product description must refer to a G9 socket.

G9 bulbs: Advantages of LED technology

Modern LED bulbs with G9 pin bases are energy-efficient, long-lasting and achieve high colour rendering. It is therefore worth switching to LED light sources and disposing of the old bulbs. The following advantages also speak for this:

  • Energy efficiency: Compared to conventional bulbs, G9 LEDs are 60 % more economical.
  • Service life: In addition to their energy efficiency, LED bulbs with G9 bases have a longer service life than halogen bulbs for G9 sockets. This prevents frequent replacement of the bulbs.
  • Colour temperature: G9 LED bulbs are available in warm white, neutral white and daylight white light colour. The colour temperature is given in Kelvin (K) and influences the light colour. Cool white light with a higher Kelvin number creates a lively, stimulating atmosphere, while warm white light with a lower Kelvin number creates a cosy and pleasant ambience.
  • Brightness: The luminous flux, measured in lumens (lm), indicates the brightness of the G9 bulb. On average, G9 bulbs have a luminous intensity of about 200 to 600 lumens. However, this is only a rough guide and the actual brightness may vary depending on the manufacturer and product.
  • Dimmability: With dimmable lamps, the brightness can be adjusted and thus significantly influence the lighting mood in the room. Dimmable bulbs must be labelled as such.

Replacing halogen lamps with G9 LED bulbs

Here is what you need to bear in mind when buying bulbs:

  • A G9 halogen bulb can only be replaced by an LED bulb with a G9 base.
  • The light colour of the G9 LED bulb should correspond to that of the halogen bulb.
  • In the case of electronic halogen transformers, the transformer must be replaced by an LED transformer.
  • If the G9 illuminant is to be dimmable, attention must be paid to the corresponding marking.
