Lamps for low ceilings

The importance of a proper lighting plan becomes clear in rooms with low ceilings: with the right lighting, you can make rooms with low ceilings appear more spacious, so that they seem brighter and larger. Incorrect lighting, on the other hand, makes low-ceilinged rooms feel cramped and dark, and can literally make the ceiling feel like it’s closing in on you. In this article, discover how to highlight the right features in the room and why choosing the right lamp is so important!

Lighting low-ceilinged rooms: 4 tips

To make rooms with low ceilings appear larger, keep these 4 tips in mind when choosing your lamp:

  • Warm white light: Warm white light (around 2700 to 3000 Kelvin) creates a cosy atmosphere. Cold light can make a room feel too sterile – this could draw too much attention to the low ceiling.
  • Vertical lighting: This lighting concept has the effect of visually elongating the room. To achieve this, you can use wall lamps that shine both downwards and upwards, or spotlights.
  • Indirect lighting: Indirect light sources cast light onto reflective surfaces, such as walls, ceilings or furniture. This causes the light to be softly diffused throughout the room, making it appear larger.
  • Accent lighting: This lighting technique allows you to highlight specific areas or elements. Artwork or shelves can be deliberately illuminated to draw the eye away from the low ceiling.

Low floor lamps

With more light sources, you can create a soft and cosy lighting atmosphere. Floor lamps are particularly effective for this purpose, as you can position and adjust them flexibly wherever there is space. Opt for short floor lamps, as lamps with too high a height make the room appear smaller.

Ceiling lamps for low ceilings

Ceiling lamps and LED recessed lights are particularly advantageous for low ceilings, as they sit close to the ceiling, provide even lighting and thus make the room appear more spacious. Ceiling lights in light colours create the illusion that the ceiling height in the room is greater. These are our favourites:

Adjustable pendant lights for low ceilings

If you’re leaning towards a pendant light as your main lighting, you should opt for a height-adjustable lamp. You can adjust this to suit the room height – with many models, you can even readjust the height after installation.

When choosing, look for an open and airy design, ideally with a wide light distribution to avoid dark corners.

For low ceilings, we recommend these height-adjustable pendant lights:

Flat lights for low ceilings

If you want to play it safe, you can opt for a particularly flat lamp. These lamps blend seamlessly into any room with low ceilings and provide even illumination:
