Cleaning lampshades: Make them look like new!

A beautiful lampshade plays a key role in the look of a lamp and the atmosphere of a room. However, over time, dust, dirt and stains build up, which detracts from its appearance. To extend the life of your lampshades and preserve the lustre of your lighting, proper care is essential. Find out how to effectively clean lampshades made from different materials without damaging the delicate surfaces. It is important to adapt your cleaning method to the material of your lampshades:

Dusting lampshades

Regardless of the material, the following applies: Regular dusting significantly extends the lifespan of lamps. Use a dry microfibre cloth, a vacuum cleaner attachment or a soft brush. This prevents dust from becoming permanently embedded in the surface and having to be laboriously removed later.

Tip: An anti-static cloth or a slightly damp cloth with a little glycerine can help keep new dust at bay for longer.

Cleaning lampshades of fly droppings

Fly droppings can leave unsightly stains. You can remove these as follows:

  • For fabric or plastic, a mild cleaning solution of water and washing-up liquid is often sufficient. Gently dab the affected area with a damp cloth.

  • For glass lampshades, you can wipe the affected areas with a damp sponge.

  • However, you should never clean paper or parchment lampshades with a damp cloth to avoid damage.

Cleaning a fabric lampshade

Fabric lampshades look elegant, but are prone to dust and stains. A vacuum cleaner attachment with a brush is suitable for removing coarse dust. For stubborn stains, a cleaning solution of water and a little washing-up liquid is recommended:

  1. Dip a microfibre cloth into the cleaning solution,

  2. wring it out well and

  3. gently wipe over the fabric.

With delicate fabric shades, you should avoid vigorous rubbing to prevent damage and discolouration.

Cleaning a parchment lampshade

Parchment is a very delicate material. Therefore, use a dry, soft cloth or a microfibre cloth to carefully remove the dust. Water or cleaning agents are a no-go for parchment, as they can damage the surface. For heavier soiling, replacement is often the only solution, as wet cleaning almost always leads to damage.

Tip: To reduce light stains or yellowing, you can gently rub the affected area with an artist’s eraser.

Cleaning a plastic lampshade

Plastic lampshades are robust and easy to care for. Wipe the surface with a sponge and a mild cleaning solution. Add a little washing-up liquid to the water to gently loosen dirt and stains. You can then rinse the lamp shade with clear water and dry it with a cloth. This keeps the lamp shade free from discolouration and maintains its fresh appearance.

Tip: A splash of vinegar in the cleaning water helps to remove grease films and nicotine deposits particularly effectively.

Cleaning a glass lamp shade

Glass lamp shades should be cleaned regularly for an optimal shine:

  1. If possible, remove the lamp shade and

  2. Remove dirt and dust with a soft sponge.

  3. Then rinse thoroughly with clear water and dry streak-free with a microfibre cloth.

Cleaning a paper lampshade

Paper is particularly susceptible to water and cleaning agents. Carefully remove dust with a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner attachment on the lowest setting. Stains should be avoided where possible, as moisture can warp or damage the paper. Also avoid direct sunlight to prevent the paper lampshade from discolouring.

However, if cleaning no longer helps, a new lampshade can give your favourite lamp a new lease of life!
