Getting it just right: How to adjust adjustable lamps to the correct height

You’ve bought a new lamp and can’t wait to make your home shine. To ensure the lamp hangs at the right height, many pendant lights and hanging lights are adjustable. They can be adjusted during installation, following the instructions, or even after installation.

Whether above the dining table, on high ceilings or over a kitchen island – height adjustable pendant lights are very popular because they make quite an impression and draw attention to a specific area in the room! They come in many styles, colours and heights. Hanging lights are particularly well suited to high ceilings. However, if the light hangs at the wrong height and, for example, blocks the view of the person opposite at the dining table, it can be rather distracting. Here’s how to remedy the situation if your hanging light hangs too low or too high:

Adjusting the light height during installation

For pendant lights that can be adjusted in height before installation, it is best to have a professional carry out the work. First, the cable is pulled through the cable cover – also known as the lamp canopy – to the desired height. Once the cable is at the correct length, it is secured in place according to the lamp’s design, for example with a screw. The pendant or hanging light is then mounted to the ceiling.

With multi-bulb lamps, the lampshades can be individually adjusted in height, for example to the same height or hung in a staggered arrangement next to one another:

If the remaining cable does not fit into the lamp canopy, it can be cut off and reattached to the ceiling using ceiling clips.

Adjusting the height of the lamp using a telescopic suspension rod

A telescopic suspension rod is a practical design that allows you to extend or retract your pendant light like a telescope to adjust its height.

The advantage here is that the telescopic suspension rod is very easy to use. This means your pendant light, such as the Skeldon hanging light, is still adjustable even after installation.

Adjusting the height of the lamp using a pull chain

A pendant light with a pull chain is fitted with one or more counterweights. These help to balance the height of the lamp. By pulling gently, the pendant light can be raised or lowered to the desired height as required.

Wrap the lamp cable around the lamp as required

Lamps and lights whose cables can be wrapped around the lamp or the rod as required offer a particularly simple method of adjusting the height of your lamp after installation. Pendant lights are ideal for this due to their oblong shape.
