The differences in cooling effect
Ceiling fans and air conditioning take completely different approaches to creating a cooling sensation. Fans circulate the air and, with refreshing bursts of air, induce evaporative cooling on the skin. Although the temperature measured in the room remains the same, the cooling effect is still achieved. Large blades produce these soothing bursts of air. A ceiling fan eliminates the feeling of stagnant air. It ensures even circulation, making sweltering heat much more bearable as a result. The higher the fan’s speed, the stronger the airflow.
Air conditioning systems actually lower the room temperature. They can humidify or dehumidify the air, and either cool or heat it in winter. Depending on the system, the temperature drop is achieved either via a refrigerant cycle or by means of water-filled chambers in the cooling unit. Here’s how it works in detail:
A refrigerant circulates between the cooling fins and the air-conditioning unit’s compressor. In the compressor, it is compressed and turns into a liquid. As it flows through the cooling fins, it expands. As it evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air and converts it into cold air in the compressor – cooling the room.
Energy efficiency
Although an air-conditioning system can cool a room down significantly, much like a giant fridge, it also consumes more electricity than a ceiling fan. The Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) helps buyers assess the relationship between the energy input and the efficiency of the air-conditioning system, or how much electricity the system consumes to achieve a defined cooling result. The higher the specified value, the better the cooling performance for the same electricity consumption. Even when running at higher speed levels, ceiling fans generally consume significantly less energy than air conditioners because they serve an other purpose. In winter, a ceiling fan can even save on heating costs through heat recovery.

Price of a ceiling fan vs. price of an air conditioner
If you want to weigh up whether a ceiling fan or an air conditioner offers better value for money, you should consider the purchase price of the unit itself, the installation costs and the ongoing running costs.
Of course, it’s not possible to quote a flat-rate purchase price. Generally speaking, however, air conditioners are in a higher price bracket to ceiling fans. Prices vary depending on design, materials and features
As air-conditioning systems require electrical connections and the laying of pipes, it is advisable to have them installed by a professional. Installing ceiling fans, on the other hand, is quite straightforward, so there are usually no installation costs.
When it comes to running costs, energy consumption is the key factor, and this is generally significantly lower for ceiling fans than for air-conditioning systems.
Which is healthier – air-conditioning or a ceiling fan?
When it comes to ceiling fans, air-conditioning systems and the like, there are advocates and opponents. The point of contention is whether ceiling fans and other technical devices for temperature control are harmless to health – for both people and the environment.
One criticism levelled at both ceiling fans and air-conditioning systems, for example, concerns a problem faced by allergy sufferers: pollen and dust particles are circulated throughout the room by the moving air. As well as allergies, dry eyes are also a potential consequence of the cool relief provided on hot days.
Due to a number of other criticisms, air-conditioning systems are viewed more critically than ceiling fans when it comes to health risks: namely, when they are not cleaned properly. Bacteria and mould can then accumulate in the filter.
Furthermore, the abrupt change between very warm and cool temperatures produced by air-conditioning units is said to place a strain on the immune system. Air-conditioning units should therefore not be set too cold, in order to protect the body. Ceiling fans are a gentler option for pleasant cooling: they do not lower the temperature in the room, but instead make use of the evaporation effect.
Everyone knows this: when the air conditioning is on, you should keep the windows closed. Otherwise, warm air flows in and even more energy is required to keep the room cool. However, closed windows prevent the air exchange that is so important for clean, germ-free air – a dilemma when using air conditioning. Some air-conditioning systems are also said to contain refrigerants which, if they escape during disposal, can be harmful to the environment.

Installing and maintaining air conditioning systems
The same applies here: the installation effort cannot be estimated in the same way for every air conditioning system. The effort involved depends on many factors, such as whether you opt for built-in models or split systems. Installing some air conditioning systems requires drilling into the building structure – so the planning and execution must be carried out with great precision.
When it comes to maintenance, too, air-conditioning units require more care than ceiling fans. Regular maintenance is important to prevent mould and bacteria from the ambient air from accumulating in the air-conditioning unit. Is the filter dirty and in need of replacement? Is there still enough coolant? These points should also be checked regularly. Maintenance intervals depend on how often the system is used: for occasional use, checks every two years are often sufficient; for frequent use, the air-conditioning system should be serviced once a year. With central air-conditioning systems, this is usually a job for a specialist.
Installing and maintaining ceiling fans
Installing ceiling fans is quite straightforward. Anyone who has ever connected a ceiling light will find installing a standard ceiling fan just as straightforward – for many, this is a reason to prefer a ceiling fan to an air-conditioning system. You can retrofit ceiling fans in your home at any time. Ceiling fans do not require regular maintenance. Simply remove dust from the blades regularly to protect the motor from overheating.
Which one wins when it comes to design?
In the living area, you want it to look nice. This makes it all the more important that the overall look of the room isn’t disrupted by an air-conditioning unit or a ceiling fan. We reckon that, however traditional it may be, the ceiling fan actually looks fresher than an air-conditioning unit thanks to its modern designs!

Ceiling fan: Hidden behind the casing
For anyone who still can’t get used to the rotor blades: there are now many ceiling fans that you can’t even recognise as such. Fans without propellers operate using what’s known as Air Multiplier technology. The blades are invisible and concealed by a housing. With ceiling fans that include a light, often only the lamp is visible. The fan itself is hidden away and can be switched on when needed. Many of these invisible ceiling fans are modelled on popular light fitting designs.
Air conditioning units are usually quite unobtrusive in design, but recognisable as such. Fixed air conditioning units are generally mounted on the wall. Portable air conditioning units stand on the floor and take up living space that could be better used for furniture or decoration. Depending on your answers, ceiling fans may be more or less suitable. Two examples: As an employer, you may want to specifically lower the temperature in the office for your staff during the summer. This isn’t possible with a ceiling fan. In this case, we would recommend an air-conditioning system and point out the associated electricity costs.
Are you a single person who occasionally wants to enjoy a cool breeze in your bedroom whilst falling asleep because the air in the room feels stagnant? In this case, a ceiling fan would be perfectly adequate. The right choice always depends on your specific needs.
