The LED revolution spreads into all lighting areas

In recent years, tremendous technological advances in light emitting diodes (LEDs) have encouraged their spread to new lighting areas. It is now possible to get powerful lighting for minimal energy consumption, something that was totally unimaginable with incandescent or even normal energy-saving bulbs. And that's not all: the service life of LEDs is extremely long, and they provide high quality light. Not only is it possible to get various levels of white light, from warm white to cold white, but LEDs are also available in various colours. Last but not least, LEDs are also very compact. This has allowed for an explosion of possibilities in terms of design. We are pleased to present LED lights with incredible finesse at Illumination.co.uk

Wide variety of LED lighting

For LED indoor lighting, the offerings are as diverse for the outdoors as indoors. In a similar vein, LEDs have also already been adapted to fit more conventional lamps, such as LED lights for outdoor wall lights and lanterns. In regards to contemporary models, designers have been able to produce ten times the number of possible shapes and extravagant fixtures with LED light bulbs. Our range of popular lights covers many models and avant-garde styles.

Also, many manufacturers have begun to take advantage of the fact that LEDs can produce not only white light, but rather many different colours of light. There are also LED ceiling lights with an automatic colour changing mode, so you can select the colour of your choice for an intimate atmosphere for your home. LED strips also allow you to bring a colourful touch to your décor, while floor lamps, and LED floor lamps provide a new twist on a classic light source.

Some technical points

LED lighting naturally directs light in one direction, like a cone of light. This is obviously a very useful feature for spotlights or LED recessed lights, because it helps them become more efficient. However, this does not prevent a LED light from providing globally uniform light, because this effect can be neutralized with LEDs in all directions (with many LED bulbs) or by covering them with a semi-opaque screen that disrupts this effect and dissipates the light in all directions. Regardless, there are many LED bulb designs to choose from.

Their best highlight is their very low energy consumption. This is due to the fact that they produce almost no heat while turned on. A little residual heat is released through the socket, but direct contact with the LED light source is safe, which is a definite advantage for children's lamps.

The exceptional lifespan of LEDs

Often the LEDs are integrated into the structure of the product for two reasons. First of all, this improves on the heat that is dissipated in the metal structure of the light even more. Secondly, the absence of the socket allows the fixture to be built in even more extreme new forms. This means that the LEDs are not replaceable and that once they reach the end of their lifespan, you need to change the entire light fixture. However, LED lights represent a profitable investment over their lifespan as they provide considerable energy savings.

In fact, LEDs have an extremely long lifespan. The simplest models can run 10,000 hours or approximately 10 years of normal use (3h/day). Most of our lights are equipped with quality LEDs to provide 20,000 hours, or 20 years of light without replacing anything! The most efficient models for office and commercial lighting in the top range can even reach 50,000 hours.

Finally, LEDs support more on/off cycles than any other type of light. Unlike energy-saving bulbs that are slowly damaged by repetitive cycling, LEDs are virtually immune. Added to the fact that they reach their maximum power in a fraction of a second, this makes them a valuable asset for motion sensor lights.

The new measures of brightness

Two important factors must influence your choice of a LED light: luminosity in lumens, and the colour of light in Kelvin. The first is simple, the more lumens, the stronger the light. The older watt and luminosity relationship used with incandescent light bulbs is totally obsolete. For comparison, a 60 Watt bulb would provide about 700 lumens of light. Today with mainstream LED technology, you can get 700 lumens with 8 - 10 Watts, and it continues to improve.

A light defined as white light has different shades ranging from yellow (warm white) to blue (cool white). Kelvin is a measure of this colour output. Simply put, the higher the number, the "colder" the light. The classic incandescent bulb has a colour temperature of 2,700 Kelvin, a relatively warm white. The yellow light of a candle is around 1,000 Kelvin. Above 4,200 Kelvin, the light starts to become colder in colour. 6,500 Kelvin usually corresponds to the light of day.
